And the major difference between your bad shots and your great shots has to be mental, because you don’t have a perfect golf swing…right?

Well…today Jeff Richmond is going to give you one simple thing 
you can do to help you hit more great golf shots…NOW! (without

Every game of golf you play you hit a great golf shot which keeps you coming back for more.  But I bet you hit way more bad shots than you do great ones…correct?

So what can you do to hit more great shots?

Quite simply, you need to record every time you hit a great golf shot.  Have a journal that you use to write down your great golf shots.  

It’s so easy to focus on your bad shots, BUT that will not help you to hit more great shots – because what you focus on is what you get.  So if you focus on your bad shots, you’ll get more of them!

You should also use your success journal for your practice as well.  Have it in your bag and every time you hit a great golf shot, pull it out and record everything about that shot.  Don’t
just write something like “hit a great 8 iron on the 12th to 3 feet”.

No!

Write down as much description as possible like this…

“On the 12th hole I was faced with an 8-iron shot from 135 yards.  The wind was slightly into me and the pin was at the front of the green.  I was very positive before the shot and could see the perfect shot in my mind.  Before swinging I was focused and confident.  As I was swinging it felt smooth and effortless and the contact was perfect and felt sooo good!  I watched the ball soar up in the sky and hang for a second and then the ball fell with a slight left to right spin and stuck right next to the pin only 3 feet away.  My playing partners congratulated me on hitting a great shot.  It felt awesome!”

Write down with great emotion the great golf shot you just played. If you don’t have a chance during a round to do this, then do it afterwards.

You know your great golf shots stick in your mind for a long time, because if I asked you to recall some great golf shots you hit in the past, you could easily tell me what they were.

So do that now actually…

Think back to a great shot you hit in the past.  Remember the great feeling you got when you hit it.  Maybe one of your playing partners made a comment about the great shot.  Maybe you remember the sound of the shot.  Write down everything you can remember about the shot.  Feel it.

It was awesome, wasn’t it.  And I bet you’d want to experience that much, much more often. What I’m revealing to you is the start of this happening for you.  

You can become a consistent golfer, just as I’ve taught countless others,  without spending hours building a perfect swing – because you have hit great golf shots already.  That’s your potential, and so to get close to that you just need to find out what you did mentally to hit those great golf shots.  

For that to happen you’ve got to do something different. 

Does this make sense to you?  Can you see how this might work?

Well, if you make writing down your great shots a habit, you’ll eventually hit more great shots and less bad shots…because what you focus on, you’ll get.

So there you go….that’s something you can do straight away to hit more great shots.

Dear Golfer,

The root causes of most golfers swing issues can be summed up as follows:
1. Your golf swing alignment is off.
2. You are not swinging the golf club on plane.

Proper golf swing alignment can be accomplished quite easily with some practice at home. Like a scope on a high powered rifle - proper swing alignment is crucial to hitting the golf ball to your target every time.

Here’s a 5 step drill for proper golf swing alignment every time:

1. Lay a golf club behind the ball pointing parallel to your target line illustrated in the PIC above.
2. Lay a golf club on the ground about a foot in front of where your feet will be – like the picture above shows – both clubs on the ground should be parallel to each other.
3. For proper ball positioning, lay a 3rd club perpendicular to and on top of the club nearest your feet like the picture above illustrates. The club should point directly at the ball and sit directly below the logo on your shirt – left side of your chest(by using your shirt logo as a ball positioning guide for ALL YOUR CLUBS, what this essentially is doing is placing the ball more in the middle of your stance with your shorter irons, and placing the ball more closer to your left foot with your longer clubs – this is because as your golf club length increases – so does the width of your stance).
4. Now take your stance with a mid iron like a 7 and make sure your shoulders, hips, and feet are all parallel to the club nearest your feet. You can ensure your shoulders and hips are aligned properly by placing a club against your shoulders then your hips, making sure this club is parallel to the one on the ground. Adjust your shoulders/hips/feet as needed until parallel to the club nearest your feet. This is gonna feel quite different at first if you’re used to having improper swing alignment.
5. Take some practice swings imagining you are sending the ball to your target. Your target should be relatively small but big enough so you can see it easily – like a tree branch in the distance. Some people imagine seeing a line that represents the flight of the ball, whatever target visualization works for you. Practice this drill over and over until it becomes automatic, this may take some time but is well worth the results. You can practice this drill on the range while you hit balls as well. The pros do this drill all the time!

Here’s a tip for swinging the golf club on plane:

Swinging the golf club on plane, requires either a swing coach or a training aid that gives you instant feedback when your golf swing is off plane. Since swing coaches can be very spendy, I tend to recommend golf training aids where you can practice in the comfort of your own home, especially during these long, cold winter months just a head for a lot of us golfers.

The swing plane is a topic that is so often talked about as being a key for a consistent golf swing, but it’s never really discussed in clear detail.

“I have been told that sometimes my swing plane gets too steep, but I am not exactly clear on what that really means. Is the focus on the path of my hands, the path of the club head, where the shaft is pointing or what exactly? I initially thought it was just the relationship between the path of the shaft and Ben Hogan’s pane of glass swing plane. i.e., if the shaft is above the pane of glass it is too steep, and if it is under the glass, it is flat. Can you clear this up for me?”

It’s an area where the more scientific/engineer types seem to have a field day. And if you’re not that way inclined you can read and watch some stuff on the swing plane that will just give you a headache!

Now, the swing plane first became popular thanks to Ben Hogan and his image of a pane of glass.

When Ben Hogan was talking about the swing plane in terms of the pane of glass, he wanted the the left arm, hands, club etc. to stay below that pane of glass on the backswing and downswing.

But when Ben Hogan’s famous five lessons book was published in 1957, they didn’t have the technology like we do today to dissect the golf swing to the nth degree. And so the concepts of the swing plane have evolved a lot from the simple illustration that Ben Hogan gave us.

So what is the golf swing plane?

Well, the golf swing plane is an imaginary flat service that is used to determine what path certain parts of the body and club are traveling on throughout the golf swing.

This may sound stupid, but it has to be said…. the golf club cannot move itself.

A lot of times when people look at the swing plane they only look at the shaft. But the shaft is only moving as a result of the body movements. So you need to look very carefully at the plane your body is moving on when looking at swing plane.

There are three swing planes in the golf swing, and they are:
1. The backswing plane
2. The downswing plane, and
3. The follow-through plane

It’s important to note that I said above “certain parts of the body and club”, because when you swing your shoulders move on a plane. Your elbows move on a plane. Your hands move on a plane, your club moves on a plane etc, etc.

That’s why if you see someone analyzing a golf swing, they’ll draw a lot of lines to try to analyze what plane different parts of the body and club are moving on.

When you swing you’re obviously swinging in a circular pattern. And because you’re bent over when swinging your swing plane is tilted. How much it is tilted depends on the player’s height, how they stand to the ball, the club being used etc. etc. There’s a number of different variables.

So everyone will not have the same swing plane because of this. And so there’s no one exact swing plane for everyone. When I say that, I’m talking about absolute degrees of swing plane. But there are good reference points every golfer can use, and I’m going to dicuss these in this swing plane educational email series.

When you hear about swing plane you often hear people saying that “so and so” has a flat swing plane, or this golfer has a steep swing plane.

When people say that, what are they referring too?

Most of the time they are referring to the shaft angle. And a good checkpoint is halfway into the backswing. A famous golf pro who is said to have a flat swing plane is Zach Johnson. Here is a picture of Zac at the half-way point in his golf swing.

Zac uses a one plane swing to hit the golf ball. So anyone that is a fan of the one plane golf swing will not say that Zac’s swing is flat. They’ll say it’s on plane. That’s where golf instructors get into arguments.

Notice that at the half way point in his backswing the club shaft is pointing out side the ball.

Now compare that to probably the most extreme case of a two plane swing, and that is Jim Furyk. Look where the shaft is pointing at the half way point in his backswing.

If you compare those two swing planes, is there any wonder amateur golfers are confused about the swing plane?!

I imagine you’re the same as me, in that you would swap your golf playing record with either of those two players given the choice!

So the swing plane is a combination of the movement (arc) of the shoulders, arms, hands and club predominantly. And this is measured and analyzed with straight lines… so it’s 2d. I have seen 3d swing plane software and analysis, but for this article I’m not even going there!

I hope that’s a simple explanation and everyone is on the same page.
